A Modern Home Office Fit for a Creative Family

We designed this modern home in Bal Harbour, Florida, for a fun, bold, creative family of six. And it wasn’t enough to just have a design concept, to create a truly unique home for our clients we used color theory to evoke different feelings throughout. See how we distributed the colors here!

In the family’s modern home office we used the color pink to recall the emotions of caring, compassion, and love—all necessities for long nights full of homework!

We started off this modern home office with a bold black-and-white houndstooth wallpaper along one wall. We were inspired by the print on our client’s existing Eames-style chairs and paired them with a streamlined pedestal table from CB2, to provide plenty of space to work on. A perfect combination!

Anahi Carrillo, our lead designer on this project, loves this little space! Her favorite parts of the room are “the pattern and the space planning. The center table is the perfect spot for creating.”

The juxtaposition of the versions of the pattern, one large-scale and one small scale, lends interest and depth to the room. A carefully assembled gallery wall is on top of the wallpaper. We collaborated with our client to select each and every piece of art—graphic prints and motivational sayings—in our chosen color scheme: pink, white, and black.

Along one wall is a giant whiteboard, perfect for working out math and science problems or playing tic-tac-toe during a study break. Modern white bins hold markers and erasers, so there’s no reason they shouldn’t be put away neatly. (One can hope!)

On the other wall is a must have element of any modern home office: bookshelves. Instead of blowing our budget on an expensive built-in option, we hacked the look with IKEA’s Billy Bookcase. Pairing both the open shelving units and a door unit or two, we created storage for kid necessities that need to be accessed at a moment’s notice and those that can be hidden away.
