As Miami interior designers, we have several tricks up our sleeves for creating impactful spaces. One of our favorite tricks is to construct interesting and unique design features on key walls in our clients’ homes. These features are often some of the coolest parts of our designs, but they don’t have to break the bank!
No matter what budget you’re working with, it’s important to consider all of the factors that go into creating your perfect feature wall.
Factor #1: Location, Location, Location
If you’re building your home from scratch, look at the floor plan or do a site visit to select your key walls. Select a wall where you want people to stop and take in your design. Living rooms, entryways, and hallways between main areas are all good spots. This is easier if you’re already living in your home, since you likely already know which walls you want to highlight.
Factor #2: Think Outside the Frame
Feature walls aren’t just about wall art. Consider items like built-ins, furniture, lighting, accessories, materials (wood, stone, glass), window treatments, paint, and so much more. Broadening items you’re using to create your focal point will impact the budget, since you can find budget-friendly wall art, but if you’ve got your heart set on marble or wood, that will raise the budget.
Factor #3: Labor and Assembly
A good rule of thumb is to count how many different trades you’ll have to hire to create the design feature. As soon as you have more than three trades involved, the project will have a higher-than-normal cost.
