Before & After: A Modern Miami Makeover

We’ve given you little hints and tiny glimpses before, but this is the big reveal! See how the DKOR Interiors team took a Miami family home from dated and dark to bright and wow-worthy.

Foyer

Let’s start in the entryway! As you can see, we kept the family’s table—an heirloom collected from their travels—and added modern elements to freshen up the space.

First, the walls got a coat of white paint and new porcelain wood-look tile was laid on the floor. To create interest, we layered a Koroseal wallpaper behind the focal wall and ceiling. We hung a large mirror and accented the table with hurricanes and more from one of our favorite brands: Arteriors.

But the best part (in our opinions), is the unexpected and playful grouping of Daikon Stilk sconces in onyx with brass.

Living Room

Take a couple steps into the home and you’ll discover the living room, truly night and day from its previous look. White walls allow your eye to be immediately drawn up to the amazing light fixtures—a custom grouping from Casa Zeta Italia. Made of steel and fabric, with a black cord and canopy for contrast, these lights aren’t just beautiful, they’re functional; each is outfitted with dimmable LED bulbs to alter the lighting as necessary.

Floor-to-ceiling drapes emphasize the room’s height while also allowing for privacy. A charcoal-painted pillar connects to a console table behind the sofa for an intriguing detail.

A pair of Minotti sofas, a leather bench, and a custom Rotsen Furniture coffee table sit atop the blue-and-gray hand-tufted rug—a custom creation that brings the whole room together.

Home Bar

Between the living and TV rooms sits the home’s very own bar, a custom carpentry creation topped with Caesarstone countertops. Pulled up to the bar are the Reese Tufted Fabric Stool from Restoration Hardware—the perfect spot to enjoy a beverage while watching a movie or Sunday’s main sporting event.

A few of Tom Dixon’s Tank Bowls are just right to hold the family’s favorite TV-watching snacks, like M&Ms and peanuts.

TV Room

The family’s TV room is a more casual version of the living room, borrowing elements like the painterly patterned rug and the fabric-wrapped lighting (a favorite from Soho). We utilized the family’s existing sectional sofa and stunning wall art, but added in some elements to bring the whole room together.

One element is the custom coffee table with coordinating ottomans that slide under when not in use. But, when the family’s kids have friends over, they can be pulled out as extra seating.

Perched atop the coffee table and built-in shelving are accessories that make the room sparkle, from the Bowdin Vase from Z Gallerie to the itty-bitty terrarium.

Family Room

The family was once a heavy, golden-hued space; but now it’s a light and fresh room where the family can gather to watch TV, host friends, or even complete school projects on the large breakfast table. A custom built-in shelf behind the Alberta Morrison Sofa is the perfect place to lean artwork—a casual twist on hanging framed art.

A fringed caramel-colored leather pillow is a nod to the room’s original color, and it warms up the mostly gray space. A subtle ceiling light is installed in the middle of the room to illuminate the space after dark.

The custom extra-large tufted ottoman pairs perfectly with the blue-and-cream area rug. To provide the family with a spot to rest glasses on the ottoman, we had to get a little clever. We took the top off of Safavieh’s Cursten Tray Top Coffee Table and placed it atop the custom ottoman.

Dining Room

Where the dining room once featured dark woods and bulky chairs, it now is home to sleek modern pieces in a gray palette. We retained much of the original wood work on one side of the room, but painted it white to match the lighter look.

Over the Ritz dining table, a Bross creation, hangs a showstopping light fixture: Heracleum Endless Suspension Light. The custom buffet stores the family’s entertaining must-haves and is the ideal spot to perch some beautiful accessories, like wall art and Menu’s Echasse Vase.

Breakfast Nook and Kitchen

From ornate to sleek, the kitchen received a night-and-day makeover. Handle-less cabinets and crisp white marble completely transform the space, while a little reconfiguration allows for an expanded breakfast spot, featuring a Totem dining table with two bases and iconic Eames molded plastic chairs in a peacock blue. A pair of modern chandeliers, including a modern glass bubble light fixture, top off the kitchen’s modern design.

Stay tuned for our next Florida-based design project! We’re working on some fun ones.
